A good war-date Union citizen's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by a certain "mother", Memphis, [Tenn.], Mar. 8, [1864?], in part: "We found a special car in readiness for the delegates to the convention on our arrival at the depot…we did not leave the cars until we arrived at Cairo, found a great part of the suburbs submerged. I cannot say that I think much of the sunny South…we arrived on time, went directly on board the Belle St. Louisa where we met others of the party. Had a very pleasant time with the acceptation of being obliged to tie up to a tree on account of the snow's being so blinding that they did not consider it safe to run. We arrived in Memphis at 10 A. M…where we found Mr. & Mrs. Myers and their party…in regard to Memphis as the mud is so bad as to entirely prevent our getting out of doors at all. I have never seen such mud before…we attended the hop last evening gotten up for the benefit of the delegates. There was quite a number of Memphis ladies present. Some very good looking ones. The mud prevented a full attendance…received quite a number of invitations to dance. We intended leaving…by cars for New Orleans, some other of the party go with us…mother." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Near fine
