A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Robert P. Rudder, Co. C, 6th Tenn. (Union) Vols., "Camp near Atlanta, Ga., July 23, 1864", in part: "…I went fishing last Monday…in the Chattahoochie River but only caught two little cats about one foot long. This river is very muddy…that night we were ordered away so I lost all. We are…in two miles of Atlanta and the troops within 1000 yards. All is pretty quiet this morning, but yesterday there was heavy fighting. We lost Gen. McPherson killed & the Rebs lost Hardee and some other Gen. They charged on us but payed dear…we are bound to have the city before long. We can burn it now if we wish…you seem to be very anxious to know hen we will come back…may be if we weaken the Rebel army…we may come back…you wanted to know what we are going to do with the Rebs down here. Well if they fight…we will whip them and if they give up we will treat them kindly. The 15th Corps yesterday got six hundred at one haul…our corps was not engaged much, only with artillery…Alec's wagon & the mules are continually kicking & biting each other so the wagon shakes so I can hardly write…R. P. Rudder…".
