Union soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written Pvt. George W. Cross, Co. K, 10th New York Heavy Artillery, Fort Craig, [Va.], Sept. 18, 1864, in part: "…I will tell you that I have gotten over all sorts of patriotic feeling. The whole thing is a speculation from beginning to end. Old Abe has done what he could to keep the thing going till this Fall…now he would like to do something merely because his election deeds on something being done. He cant have my vote. If I cant do better…I will not vote…for I will never give a vote to inflict him upon the country for another four years…his wife is a traitor and she has more influence over him than is good for the country. I am glad you have got done of the draft for this time, but it will come next spring…for there is lots of men to be discharged…furnished us with blacking emery paper [for polishing gun barrels] and and gloves. I have go two good pair of white gloves…but that is played out…that raising of our wages was another humbug…we had an artillery inspection today by General Harkins lasting about three hours…our sutler sells butter at 70 cts and potatoes at 8 cts pr lbs. One of the recruits came up to me yesterday. I was on post at the gate…he said where abbots is that fort. I asked him what one he meant. Why our fort, Fort Craig…its right here; Yes, but what direction…I could not hardly convince him that he was at the gate. So goes the world…Geo. W. Cross." VG
