A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James C. Percival 83rd Penn. Vols., A. G. O. [Adjutant General's Office, Petersburg, Va.], June 23, 1864, in part: "…yesterday I was detailed as clerk in the Adjutant General's Office at Head Qrts, 5th Army Corps…there has been heavy picket firing all night and it has not stopped yet. Once or twice they got to going so fast that it took a little artillery to silence them…the regiment…were in the 2nd line of works. They worked nearly all night before making breastworks and got pretty good ones…the front line is only 150 yards from the enemy's works. The 2nd Corps had…more fighting yesterday than they could stand so the 3rd had to send them some help…all is right now. We are near Petersburg [and] have not yet taken the place…James C. Percival, Head Quarters 5th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac." Light spotting, else VG
