MARSHALL, George C. (1880-1959). World War II Army Chief of Staff and General of the Army, as Truman's Secretary of State he devised the recovery plan for Europe bearing his name. As Secretary of Defense under Truman he directed the early years of the Korean War. Typed Letter Signed, “G. Marshall” as Chief of Staff, 1p. quarto, April 4, 1940, addressed to Colonel Freeman W. Bowley, and reads in part: “...Your recent retirement from active service on account of physical disability is regretted, and I wish to convey the War Depratment’s appreciation, as well as my own, for the long and faithful service you rendered the country as an officer in the United States Army...” with cover.
