ALEXANDER, Edmund Brooke (1802-1888) Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated in 1823 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he was a classmate of future Union Generals Lorenzo Thomas and George S. Greene. He served many years on the American frontier, and fought in the Mexican War, where his leadership of his troops in the Battles of Cerro Gordo, Contreras and Churubusco won him the brevets of Major and Lieutenant Colonel. In 1855 he was promoted to Colonel, and was given command of the 10th United States Regular Infantry when that newly authorized regiment was formed that year. When the Civil War began he served as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General for the city of St. Louis, Missouri, which was strongly divided between Southern and Unionist sentiments. He also served as the chief recruiting and disbursing officer for all of war-divided Missouri. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on October 18, 1865 for "meritorious services in the recruitment of the armies of the United States", he retired with the rank of Colonel in 1869, having served 46 years in the United States Army. Manuscript Document Signed “E.B. Alexander” as colonel and Assistant Provost Marshall General for Missiouri, on rare “Head Quarters, Recruiting Service, Missiouri Vols.” lettersheet, Saint Louis, December 28, 1863, it is Special Order No. 79 and reads “The following named commissioned officer and enlisted men of the 1st Mo. Vol. Art. Battery ‘G’ having this day reported at these Head Quarters in obedience to S.O. No. 336 Head Quarters Dept. of the Cumberland dated Chattanooga Dec. 15th 1863, are here by ordered to proceed to open a recruiting rendezvous at St. Louis...They will be governed by existing orders relative recruiting service...” Very good condition.
