War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edward H. Vidlear, Co. G, 114th New York Vols., [WIA Opequon, Va., 9/19/64], Camp Bilger, [Baltimore, Md.], Oct. 8, 1862, in part: "...we drilled 5 hours this forenoon in quick time and you better think we sweat. Some sweat now more like a niger…we expect to leave here in a very short time but don't now whare we shall go…there is some one in the guard house all of the time. Sunday night 4 of our boys got drunk and were put under guard. I wont tell who they were though last night a man got asleep on guard and was put in the guard house…thare is only about 300 of our Reg. here now. The rest are scattered all about…thare is some 15 to 20 of our Co. sick…from Edward H. Vilder…tell me who got drafted." VG
