A group of three (3) war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edward H. Vidlear, Co. D, 3rd Veteran Reserve Corps, [WIA Opequon, Va., 9/19/64]. The first is from Washington Barracks, DC, Jan. 17, 1864[5], in part: "…I left Satterlee the 15th and came here…I have been put into the Veteran reserve Corps on account of my wound unfitting me for the march…we are not over 30 rods from the Capital Building. My regt. guards rebel prisoners at the Capitol prison…I belong to Co. D 3d Regt. Veteran Reserve Corps. We have 85 men in this Co. …I have been to work…scowing my gun and brasses…direct to E. H. Vidlear, Co. D, 3d Regt. Veteran Reserve Corps, Washington, DC…[Goshen, Orange Co., N. Y., Apr. 30, 65]…I wrote about one [of our] corporals meeting with a sad accident last night. At 13 minutes before 10 he breathed his last. He bled to death. The main artery breaking loose. I was with him most of the time…until he died. He was a German by birth and a very warm hearted men. We all deeply feel his loss. This is the most beautiful country…how does that English cousin get along. Is his sick any yet…I now think I shall get my discharge before the expiration of my term of service…I should like to come home and go to work again…E. H. Vidlear…". Also included is a letter from July 1865 in which Vidlear complains of being bored at not being discharged and wanting his pay. All minor toning, else VG (3 letters.)
