War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, Fort Stedman, [Va.], Oct. 5, 1864, in part: "…I am well save pain in my face. I have been wondering all day whether you had the ague. There are so many cases in the army. I pity any one who get it. The sun shines…without mercy…we have only one thought to make us feel happy that is when the war is over and we can come home. Wont that be a happy time for us poor unfortunate beings. The army is the place to find the want of friends who sympathize with and care for you and to learn the value of a good home…mother and father…I have just returned from the sutler with some nice apples…a large train of recruits has…passed on Grant's railroad. They seem to be in high glee but the poor fellows has never seen a battle field…when they must go to meet the foe they will look toward a safe and plentiful home, but they are no better than we and must risk a little for honest Abe Lincoln and the poor down trodden nig. We have two divisions of Negro Troops here. They are fine looking fellows at least some of their admirers think so. I suppose the Sunbury boys have had some hard times in the Shenandoah Valley under Genl. Sheridan. They have been doing some hard fighting and no doubt have lost some men. They have been quite fortunate until they came to this dept. in regards to fighting…Wiil, Baty F, 1st Pa. Arty, 2nd Corps…". VG
