War-date Union officer's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, "Camp in front of Fort Stedman, Va.," Oct. 12, 1864, in part: "…I have not heard from brother since the battle. I hope he may be safe. I intend going to see him soon. I am so sleepy I can scarcely keep my eyes open. I was up all night making out the returns of our election. I was one of the judges. It was tedious task as our company represents fifteen different counties. The vote was nearly a tie, only two voters from North[umberla]d Co…I suppose the vote of our Baty will republished…Capt. Ricketts started for home this morning…Lieut. C. has command of the Baty…we will have a nice time since the Boss has gone…quiet prevails in our immediate front save sharpshooters which has grown into a regular practice among both parties…Will, Battery F, 1st Pa. Art, 2nd Corps…". VG
