War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, "Head Qrs. Baty 14," [Petersburg, Va.], Jan. 24, 1865, in part: "…Lieut. L. Shipman…is at Genl. Ord's Head Qrs., Army of the James. He is full of jokes…I have been building a magazine. The recent storms damaged my ammunition…I must keep my powder dry. I will have it completed by tomorrow…the Rebs put up tents along my front…making a splendid mark. I opened on them putting several holes through causing them to pull down in a hurrah. They did not…like this new arrangement of mine and soon commenced to retaliate in the way of sending back some huge mortar shells, as the boys say quite careless[ly]…throwing piles of earth in all directions…fortunately doing no damage to my command…I also send my compliments to Petersburg in the way of two percussion shells causing quite a stir among the inhabitants. We heard heavy firing on the night of the 23rd near Dutch Gap….rumors…that the Rebel rams & gunboats attacked ours and was repulsed...W. H. Thurston, Lieut. Baty F, 1st Pa. Arty, 2nd Corps…". Minor toning, else VG
