War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, "Hd. Qrs. Baty F," [Petersburg, Va.], "Camp near Hatcher's Run", Mar. 27, 1865, in part: "…we came here last night and have established our camp…we have our battery in a new fort on the 5th Corps line on the banks of Hatcher's Run. We fought a severe battle on the 25th and gained some advantages. We captured (3000)…prisoners. The Rebels broke through our line at Fort Stedman & Baty No. 14 and took our men prisoner to the number of four or five hundred…only a short time ago I was in Baty No. 14. I was just relieved in time to save atria to Richmond. I am glad as I should not like to be a prisoner just now. The battle ragged furiously all day. Musketry equal to the memorable May 5th in the Wilderness. The loss in artillery is slight as the dense thicket prevents its use here…this is the beginning of the great campaign. I claim a victory on the 25th as we drove them back and made important captures…Lieut. W. H. Thurston, Baty F, 1st Pa. Arty, 2nd Corps…". Light toning, else VG
