War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, "Hd. Qrs. Baty F," City Point, Va., Apr. 12, 1865, in part: "…our camp looks beautiful. We have planted it full of cedar and spruce…we will stay here some length of time. Ten thousand (10,000) Rebel prisoners passed here today among them Lieut. Genl. Ewell. Lee passed here last knight and proceeded to Richmond…the recent movement of the Potomac army will astonish the world. We have in a short space of ten days destroyed the boasted army of Genl. Lee. What we did not capture surrendered on the 9th April. I suppose the people did not look for this good news, indeed we have accomplished much more than we thought possible. This will be the wind up as the remaining Rebel armies cannot stand before the mighty army of Grant's. I feel happy that we are so near the end…all will be peace and rest. You say that there are so many soldiers at home. I thought they had mostly returned as the campaign had opened, but it appears not…Lieut. W. H. Thurston, Baty F, 1st Pa. Arty, 4th Brig. Arty Reserve, Army of the Potomac". Near fine
