War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, City Point, [Va.], Apr. 27, 1865, in part: "…the death of the President continues to be the whole conversation here. Nearly all the officers in the army wear black crape on his sword and arm. All the public buildings are draped in mourning. I could not had I the gift of a great writer describe the feeling prevalent in the army, but he is dead. Let a monument mark his last resting place [as] the martyr of liberty, love and truth. The news we have received from Sherman does not meet with favor here. We are informed that he has allowed Davis to make good his escape with all his plunder and [has] entered into a disgraceful agreement with Johnson…I am sorry to hear this from that able soldier but he has…through these disgraceful acts beaten all his military fame and his proud name will soon be forgotten…Grant has gone to se about it and we will soon learn all the truth…W. H. Thurston…". VG
