A rare group of three Lincoln assassination related letters, totaling 10 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Laura J. Morgan (who is the recipient of all the Thurston letters offered here), Sunbury, Pa., April 23-May 8, 1865, to her beau Lt. William M. Thurston, Battery F (Ricketts), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, in part: "[Apr. 23]…I wish you could see how nicely they have their churches draped in mourning. The citizens had white a time here last Wednesday, mourning put up at every house public or private and the bells tolled the funeral, also service in all the churches. We had black festooned above the front door and black on the big flag for the Mill. The people go on awfully. I hope and pray that I may never again see such times as these…I am sorry that you are plagued with so much that worries you. I would think the cares of the battery would not…be of such a fatiguing nature…[Apr. 25]…I have read the most of the Inquirer this evening nothing satisfactory there. All in regard to the burial of President Lincoln. Te people here laud him to the skies, but I cant see that part, although I am one of Booth's most bitterest enemies…[May 8]…your welcome letter of the 5th came to Sunbury this morn…I thought it was on the way nearly as long as the corpse of our honorable President was to Illinois…". Some soiling, else VG
