Good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. William W. Black, Co. C, 210th Penn. Vols., "Camp near the Weldon RR," Feb. 23, 1865, concerning his nearly being captured during the battle of Dabney's Mill at Hatcher's Run, in part: "…we have put up winter quarters three times already and are at it the fourth time…we was in a scrape with the Johnies the other day. There was several wounded and killed in our regiment but as good luck I came through it without being touch, but I had my gun shot. The ball went in it and lodged in the back. It came near my hand. I don't care about much closer shooting for it hant healthy. Abraham Patterson [Co. D]…was wounded through the leg but not very bad…I have no pen. I lost my knapsack. The Johnies was close on me and away went my knapsack for I couldn't see the point of going to Richmond. This year they are a taking a good many of the boys pay off of them for going back to camp. Some never stop till they got in camp. We have a man in our company that run in camp and the boys has there own fun with him…Company C, 210 Regt., W. W. Black…".
