BRANNAN, John Milton (1819-1892), 1841 West Point graduate, served in Mexican War, Seminole War.He entered the Civil war as brigadier-general of volunteers, was made brevet lieutenant-colonel in the regular army for gallantry at the battle of Jacksonville, Fla. in 1862, and in Sept., 1863, won the brevet of colonel for meritorious service at the battle of Chickamauga On Jan. 23, 1865, he was brevetted major-general of volunteers and on March 13, 1865, was given the brevet of major-general in the regular army for services at Atlanta. He was active in the Tennessee and Georgia campaigns, fighting with distinction in most of the battles of each. Autograph Letter Signed, “Jn. Barnnan” 2pp., on printed letterhead, Department of the Cumberland, Eastport, Miss, january 20, 1865, to vt. Maj. Gen. Wilson, VG. In full “My Dear General --- Your note of this date recd. I will “Horse” Bainbridge’s battery, also the regular Company belonging to the Army of the Tenneesee now at Nashville, & if the Comdg. General consents, will give you Canby’s company also. I cannot send Bainbridge to you now but will try to do so as soon as I can find a suitable Field Officer to take charge of the Reserve Artillery which I hope to accomplish as soon as I arrive in Nashville, perhaps next wee. -- Very truly yours, - (Signed) J. M. Brannan” --- “P.S. A private note from Nashville says that Genl. Webster & the remainder of Genl. Sherman’s staff are ordered to Savannah, & that the two Depts. of the Cumberland & Ohio consolidated under the command of Genl. Thomas. Fort Fisher has fallen under combined efforts of Admiral Porter & Major. Genl. Ord. -- J.M.B.”
