Union soldier’s letter written and signed by Lewis Babbott enlisted in July 1861 and fought with the 34th Ohio all through the war. He was wounded July 20th, 1864 at the Battle of Winchester, Virginia and died of disease in Columbus, Ohio on June 1st, 1865. The 3pp letter is datelined Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 10th, 1865, written from the hospital. The stationary this 2 ½ page letter is written on has the U.S. Christian Commission pigeon with envelope around its neck and the phrase, “The U.S. Christian Commission sends this sheet as a messenger between the soldier and his home. Let it hasten to those who wait for tidings.” The letter states that the hospital is 3 miles from Columbus, “so I can’t get up to town where I am a minor.” Poor Babbott states “send me a little money… I have to beg about everything I get. It is pretty hard to get any clothing. There is plenty of suckers that watch us” and says that they will steal from him every chance they get. Apparently, Lewis’s wound got infected as the Civil War Database states that he died of disease in Columbus, Ohio on June 1st, 1865.
