An accounting prepared by Office of Assayer United States Branch Mint, July 9, 1869, 4pp., VG. H.H. LAWRENCE writes to GENERAL E.A. HITCHCOCK with statement of Hitchcock's San Francisco property holdings for the month of June 1869, amounting to $19,463.65 rents and notes on hand. Lawrence adds "The overland rail road has not done such wonderful things for us on this coast as we would have expected it would, perhaps it will come yet, we will keep hoping. Times are very dull and there is a great complaint among business men…' ETHAN ALLEN HITCHCOCK (1798 - 1870) served in the Seminole War and in the Mexican War, where received brevet promotions to colonel for Contreras and Churubusco and to brigadier general for Molino del Rey. From 1851-1854 he commanded the Department of the Pacific. Commissioned a major general in February, 1862, he became special adviser to the Secretary of War and later served as Commissary-General of Prisoners. HENRY H. LAWRENCE (1825-1901) arrived in San Francisco in 1849. After little success as a miner, Lawrence settled in Napa. In March 1854 he was appointed Conductor of the San Francisco Mint and later served as Chief Assayer.
