A great war-date postal cover addressed to: "Hon. David Davis, Judge Supreme Court, Washington, D. C." DAVID DAVIS (1815-1886) who was an early friend of Abraham Lincoln. As a young attorneys they rode the circuit together. He is credited with nearly single handedly helping secure Lincoln's nominate at the 1860 Republican Convention. In turn, Lincoln nominated Davis a Supreme Court justice in late 1862 when Justice John A. Campbell resigned in protest to Lincoln's policies for carrying on the war. Late when tragedy struck, he stood by Robert Lincoln's side during the funeral for his old friend. Afterwards he remained politically and socially influential throughout his long and storied career.
