A great war-date Union soldier's 1865 Lincoln Inaugural letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John H. Everett, (formerly 16th Maine), Washington, D. C., March 5, 1865, in part: "…I was at the Capital this forenoon. There was preaching by Professor Simpson in the Hall of Representatives. He is one of the greatest preachers…in the country. The house was crowded. There were about 2500 people present. Uncle & Aunt Abe were there also. Aunt Abe is a fen looking woman. She is in pretty good order & weighs…about 200 [pounds] or more…she must live a little better than we do…yesterday was the Inauguration…our Regt was on duty at the Capital most all day. It was muddy enough too…it had rained 2 days & it rained part of the forenoon…but it cleared off & the sun came out brightly just as Abraham was mustered in for 4 years more. The preacher thought that was a good sign. There was a star to be seen most all day about in the center of the Heavens. It showns as bright as in night. I saw it about 3 o'clock in the afternoon…was a good sign too the star of Peace…the war will be over in about 3 or 4 months…we hear good news from the front every day…we have plenty to read. The Christian Commission came round once a week with reading. I suppose the company can all read. I like our colonel first rate…yours etc., J. H. Everett." With a rare original Sanitary Commission postmarked transmittal cover is included. Both near fine.
