MORTON, Paul, (1857–1911) who served in Theodore Roosevelt’s cabinet as Secretary of the Navy for one year from 1904 to 1905. Previous to this, he had been vice president of the Santa Fe Railroad. When it came to light that the Santa Fe had given illegal rebates under Morton, he was forced out of the cabinet to avoid scandal, Partly-printed DS, one page, 9.5 x 15, October 19, 1904. Naval appointment issued to William Nicholas Richardson, Jr. In part: “By direction of the President of the United States you are hereby appointed a Midshipman in the United States Navy.” Signed at the conclusion by Secretary of Navy Morton. In fine condition.
