A World War II scrapebook filled with articles written by or about the very popular newspaper War Correspondent Ernie Pyle. Also tipped into the scrapebook is the front page of the April 19, 1945 newspaper "The Detroit free Press" that describes the death of Ernie Pyle after being shot by a Japanese Army machine gunner in fighting on a small Island off the coast of Okinawa where very heavy fighting against Japanese military forces was raging. The scrapebook has 42 pages of articles written by or about Ernie Pyle. Ernie Pyle saw extensive service during world War II and reported on fighting in North Africa, Italy, and France. He was in a building in Italy that was hit by a German bomb and survived without major injury. In early 1945 he came back to the United States for a short visit with his family before going to the Pacific war front where he was killed covering the fighting. He was known as the GI's reporter and he wrote several books during the war about the average soldier in the front lines plus popular daily newspaper columns about the war and the average soldier. He told a friend before he shipped out to the Pacific fighting that he was hurting inside from everything had had seen and gone through and he had a premonition that something was going to happen to him in the Pacific war front. The Detriot Free Press newspaper has headlines about the Russian Army advancing on Berlin and a photo and large article about Ernie Pyle's death with the title "COMPANION DESCRIBES PYLE'S DEATH, JAP BULLET KILLS REPORTER AT ROADSIDE". The scrapebook has articles about Ernie Pyle's death and how great men and small mourn Ernie Pyle. Also included are photos of where Ernie Pyle died, the last caption he sent to the newspapers and his last newspaper column he wrote before his death. There is also a article about the November 28th funeral for Ernie Pyle's widow. Apparently she died from grief shortly after Ernie Pyle died. The scrapebook is 12 ½ x 14 ½ inches in size. Some of the back pages of the scrapebook are detached from the book but can probably be reattached otherwise the contents of the scarpebook are in overall nice condition.
