Beautiful early railroad bond, 14” x 10,” with 7 attached coupons, Certificate #147 from the Louisville, Cincinnati & Charleston Rail Road issued in December 38, 1838. This historic document was printed by Drapel Toppan Longacre & Co. and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of an allegorical woman, a Revolutionary War hero, and a cherub between South Carolina's state seal. The item has been hand signed by the Company’s President, Robert Y. Hayne, who was considered an ardent free-trader and an uncompromising advocate of States' rights. He opposed the tariff bills of 1824 and 1828, and consistently upheld the doctrine that slavery was a domestic institution and should be dealt with only by the individual states. On January 19, 1830 Hayne attacked the people of New England in a speech on the Senate floor. SENATOR DANIEL WEBSTER responded and his "Second Reply to Hayne" is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history. Hayne was a member of the South Carolina Nullification Convention of November 1832. After resigning from the Senate in 1832, Hayne served as Governor of South Carolina (1832-1834). He was president of the Louisville, Cincinnati & Charleston Railway from 1837 to 1839.VG
