Group of three (3) antebellum letters concerning updating merchant George Howe of Boston on the Cotton business in the deep South being written by numerous individuals from Mobile and New Orleans between 1845 and 1847. The letter written by J. B. Tomlin [?] of Mobile, Ala., on May 16, 1846 gives a good example of the others content and reads, in part: "…the difference in the deficiency of receipts at the ports between this and last week in only temporary from local causes. The total decrease of foreign exports is 577,495 bales as compared with the same term last year. The falling off to Great Britain alone is 413,588 bales; hence you can judge of the probable effect of such a decrease in the Liverpool market. The stock of cotton in Mobile is now 102,960 bales and there are only 7 vessels disengaged. Freights are still going up 7/8 pr. II to Liverpool…and 7/8 to 1* for Boston & New York…". A post script at the bottom of the letter by Mr. Howe reads, in full: "We are purchasing fully fair cotton @ 7 1/2 to 7.50 cents." The other two letters contain like content and both have one margin trimmed effecting its contents, but only negligibly. (Three pieces)
