Two complete and authentic issues of the American and Commercial Advertiser, Baltimore, including February 13, 1864, large format 8 columns, 4pp., disbound srough at spine. From the front page, “Rebel Highway Robbers, Stoppage of a Railway Train, Robbery of the Passengers.” Reports on a train leaving Baltimore and encountering a pile of wood 10 miles east of Martinsburg. When the train stopped, a band of 40 armed highway men told the passengers to “stand and deliver.” History shows according to research, “However, the first train robbery in the United States actually occurred on October 6, 1866, when robbers boarded the Ohio & Mississippi train shortly after it left Seymour, Indiana.” ... plus, February 16, 1864, The Guerilla Exploit on baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Capture Some of the Robbers. The 1/4 column report spells out the details of the capture stating they belong to the Gilmore Band which was led by Harry Gilmore. Gilmore served as the Baltimore City Police Commissioner, head of the Baltimore City Police Department in the 1870s, but he was most noted as a daring and dashing Confederate cavalry officer during the American Civil War. Gilmor's daring raids, such as The Magnolia Station Raid through north-central Maryland in July 1864. Gilmor was eventually ordered to take his command to Hardy County, West Virginia, and attack the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
