The Oklahoma Land Rush of 1869 flooded the plains with new settlers. Included here are two rare homesteader related albumen photographs, each approximately 8" x 4 1/2", depict a young pioneer family in front of their homestead and virgin town giving us a good sense of the bleakness of the landscape. On the back of each the matriarch of the family Anna Decker gives a description of the scene. Each card has been trimmed effecting a few words of the text. The back of the town scene card, reads, in part: (the town scene) "I will give you some idea [o]f this picture. This is our…remation house. The sod one…this is me and the child[ren are s]tanding by the window…nd road with the mail…that is our mule team. The…[c]arries the mail on the…d of the road with the dog l[ayin]g between them and…the office is the stage from…this is a very small sketch of our town but this rod house w[as th]e first in the township an[d th]ere was a great demand for…pictures. This is where I [ke]pt boarders and fed a good many hundred people here…has his post office is…small frame building now [a]nd there is a family living [i]n the house this winter." While the back of the homestead scene, reads, in part: "and this is our home stead…we stood out of the house so that the surrounding take [be taken] and it made us look tall…but we are not so tall. Those small dark things are [tr]ees around the yard…Anna Decker." Both cards were transcribed to the best of our ability. Both with expected wear, else VG
