A great ca. Sept. 1872 Grant reelection nominating committee manuscript document. As supporters of Grant for reelection this document reads, in part: "This certifies that at a meeting held by the soldiers of Noble County, Indiana…on September 14, 1872. Isaac Mendenhall late corporal of the 5th Indiana Artillery [WIA Perryville, KY, 10/08/62] was chosen as a delegate to represent the soldiers of Noble County…at the soldier and sailors convention that assembles at Pittsburgh, Penn. Sept. 17, 1872 with the following resolution approved by the soldiers of Noble County…we the soldiers…heartily endorse the nomination of General Grant and Henry Wilson candidates for president and vice president of the United States and that we will give them our united support. Resolved that we are opposed to the sentiment uttered by Horace Greely when he said "That he hoped the day would come that the soldiers who fought under Lee and Johnson would be as much respected as the soldiers who fought under Grant and Sherman…we cannot forget the past as long as we see the empty sleeve, the crutch, the tear of the widow and hear the cries of the orphans of our fallen comrades…Eden H. Fisher, Late Capt. Co. A, 21st Ind. Vol, President." Fisher was severely wounded in action in Louisiana in October 1862 whose legs amputated as a result of these wounds. Near fine.
