Lot of 72 original checks from the BULLION & EXCHANGE BANK OF CARSON CITY, NEVADA, 1893. Signed by T.R. HOFER as Cashier. The CARSON CITY SAVINGS BANK was incorporated in 1875, when local businessmen saw a need for banking in Carson City, Nevada, particularly after the opening of the US Mint in 1869. The bank became the BULLION AND EXCHANGE BANK in 1882. The Bullion & Exchange bank acted as a clearing house for other banks in Nevada for bullion, coin, scrip, drafts, checks, bills of exchange and other valuables, with branches in Hawthorne, Tonopah, Goldfield and Manhattan, Nevada. The Bullion & Exchange evolved as a unique Nevada financial institution under the direction of CASHIER T. R. HOFER, Richard Kirman Sr, Jacob Klein and Evan Williams, all powerful financial figures in Nevada's early development. Hofer acted as temporary superintendent of the Carson City mint in 1885 and later as Chief Superintendent of the mint in the 1890's. It can be argued that the unholy alliance of a largely unregulated bank and a former mint acting as a refinery led to one of the greatest scandals in mint history when $75,000 in US treasury gold surreptitiously disappeared from the mint. With the decline in mining and reductions in development, the Bullion and Exchange Bank was restructured into the State Bank and Trust Company in 1903, failing by 1907. Many years later when the old Carson bank building was razed, a large cache of early bank documents including checks and certificates of deposits was found by workmen. This cache of documents was later sold at public auction during the 1970's.
