CLAY, Henry (1777 - 1852) American politician, the "Great Pacificator" who supported the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 which sought to avoid a civil war on the issue of states' rights and slavery. Autograph Letter Signed, “H. Clay” 1p. quarto, March 4, 1842, Washington, addressed to J.E. Sprague, and reads “In the hurry of business the other day, I received and answered a letter from you. your signature was not very legible, and I took it for Speyer as did Mr. Brent to whom I showed it, and so I addressed my answer. On reflection, and inquiry, I was satisfied of my mistake, which I pray you to excuse, and to consider the letter to erronesuly addressed as intended for you...” Fine. Framed.
