BARNUM, Phineas T. (1810-1891) World famous showman, visionary, entrepreneur who Lincoln once described as the man who "humbugged the public." Autograph Letter Signed, “P.T. Barnum” 1p. octavo, May 16, 1879, addressed to Mayor Doyle, and reads in part: “...To those who try to do right, apparent evils are usually blessings in disguise. I so regard this dampener to our immediate show prospects. If showmen had the ordering of the weather I fear there would be poor harvests so I say with all my heart ‘The Lord reigns (rains) let the earth rejoice!”...With attached card of Parnum’s addressed to Mayor Doyle. Both VG.
