Pocket watch, 2 1/4" diameter, ca. 1900, Canton, Ohio. When opened, this classic gold pocket watch revealed the following note: "This watch belonged to Dr. Wesley Harrington Ketchum and was carried by him all through the furor about Edgar Cayce." Interesting. Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) was a Kentuckian of supposedly uncanny psychic abilities. Known as the "Sleeping Prophet", Cayce specialized in predictions and past life regressions. As with all such men, he had his followers and he had his detractors. In 1910 Cayce rose from obscurity thanks to an article written by Wesley Ketchum, M.D. which was submitted to The American Society of Clinical research in Boston. The New York Times picked up on Ketchum's work and printed their own stories about Cayce. With fame came controversy and apparently Dr. Ketchum stood by his "discovery", all the while carrying this watch. It has an ornate gold fob and the works still function. VF condition.
