A great war-date Union sailor's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Isaiah I. Samson, Charleston, S. C., Mar. 19, 1865, in part: "…it is quite lonesome down here. I have bin ashore today and went to church….I went to about half dozen churches and the shot and shell had torn them to pieces so there is no service held in any of them…they knew of but one [and] that [is] a darky church. I went to that & found it shut so I gave it up and started on board…I met a gentleman and lady…they had a hymn book…so I followed them…to a church…now I…know where to go to church in Sunday…I have a great many trials but thank god he has always bin with me. I pray three times a day and read the bible every chance I get…". The original transmittal cover with U. S. S. Ship 3 cts post mark is included. VG
