A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain "M. A. Bentley", Camel Hospital, Liberty, Va., April 2, 1863 to his father, in part: "It is with pleasure…that I seat myself to drop you a few lines…I have commenced writing to you again but I have not received a letter from you in some time…I am very sorry that I cannot heard from you all…I cant help from riting to you but what good does it do me to rite to you…you never rite to me…the clouds that is hovering over us looks very dark and gloomy. It is the darkest cloud that ever over shadowed the eyes of this Confederacy. The time is close at hand when the hills of old Va. shall be running with blood. How solemn a time it is to our soldier boys. The time is near when a many pore youth shall bid home and friends farewell and if one of your dear sons shall fall upon the bloody field his troubles will be done on this earth…before this war shall end…all the sons of the south shall go that way. The hardest fighting that ever has bin done will be done this summer. The hills of the sunny south will be full of wripling streams of blood. Well I reckon that will do you on that subject. Tell mother…not [to] study too much about the well fare of her sons in the army. Tell her that I am larger than I ever were in my life…your son until death, M. A. Bentley." Excepted wear, else VG.
