Confederate Soldier’s letter written by “W.W. Raffield” who enlisted on 8/1/1863 as a private into "D" Co. SC 4th State Line Infantry. Written to his brother, Sumter, August 25th, 1863, 2pp. In part, “All eyes are turned toward Charleston at this time. The Yankees have knocked one side out & are shooting through the other but the fort is not given up. They are making sand ballast in the old place & are going to stand to it. The Yankees have been throwing shell in the city Friday night, commenced Sunday night again ... the balls weigh 7 or 8 hundred pounds. ... I wish you could make me a pair of shoes for I am near barefooted ... Somewhere we have got a company raised of old men and exempts & boys in Sumter for home defense ...’
