Union soldier’s letter written by Austin Fenn who enlisted on 7/22/1862 as a private into "H" Co. VT 10th Infantry, October 5, 1864, Harrisonbuurg, Virginia, 2pp., with cover, written to his wife. In part, “I am well and all right as you get all the news by by papers and I am in a hurry I guess I will let a short letter answer. General Sheridan’s Aid went to Daytonville day before yesterday 6 miles from here and the citizens shot him and his orderly. General Sheridan ordered the town burned and everything destroyed that they did not move. Within an hour and half, last night the whole place was in blazes. The women begged and prayed but it was no use they must learn better than to shoot our men when they are citizens, or pretend to be. I cant tell what our next move will be ....”
