Showy May 20, 1835 dated playbill for "MISS PHILLIPS, the celebrated tragic actress…will make her first appearance this evening…" in the leading role of a play GAMESTER. 7 x 14; blank reverse with extremely bold, fancy, multi-style typefaces. Mentions her name again in the list of players in the leading role and also at the bottom "Tomorrow evening Miss Phillips will perform in rehearsal [for] the dramatic spectacle of NAPOLEAN." Light normal aging. Exc. +. Only the blank side margins have been trimmed close, but not affecting any wording. This broadside is for a play to take place at the famous "Chestnut Street Theater" in Philadelphia. Very possibly Sophia Phillips who was known to have appeared in leading roles in that theater as early as 1828.
