Confederate soldier’s letter written by “William” Thomas Reddish who enlisted 4/21/1862 into "B" Co. GA 54th Infantry, was listed as paroled 5/20/1865 Thomasville, GA. The 2pp. letter is datelined Jonesboro, GA., Sept. 16, 1864. In part, “We have been resting perfectly quiet for several days past as there has been an armistice agreed on for ten days for the purpose of removing the citizens of Atlanta banished by order of General Sherman. He has ordered all citizens to go either North or South; all our ambulances are now engaged in moving them within our lines. ... would have written to Clay but do not know where to direct my letter as I learn that the prisoners have been removed from Point Lookout. If you have any late information as to his present location and will let me know I will write immediately ... I will send them through the lines so that they will go without being inspected, as when sent by Flag of Truce. I can send them to Hickman on the Mississippi River where they will be mailed. ... I was not present at the death of William Hughes (Also of Co. B who died of disease on July 25th, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga.) as he was sent directly to Gen. Hospital and I saw no more of him. I regret his death. So much as any person with whom I have been acquainted as he was a special friend of mine. ....”
