A Confederate POW letter written by “T(homas M(atthew) Turner who enlisted on 6/2/1861 as a private into "I" Co. VA 4th Infantry. He was POW 7/3/1863 Gettysburg, PA., Confined 7/6/1863 Fort Delaware, DE., Exchanged 2/18/1865 Fort Delaware, DE. The 1pp., letter is datelined Pt. Lookout Jan. 25th/65. In part, “The personal who you inserted in the Enquirer has attracted the attention of several friends, and I have received many offers of assistance, among them one from your old friend Mr. Wickham of St. Louis, who seems very anxious to do all he can for me, and has done a great deal towards rendering me comfortable; but I am not allowed to receive clothing from him as he is not a relation. ....” As with any P.O.W. letter, the best part is often the cover and with our letter is a fine cover. The cover has a 3 cent rose number 65 tied Point Lookout, Md. January 25th, 1865. There is a faint examined octagon under the “Due 10” stamp. he Liberty Hall Volunteers were Stonewall’s college boys, and the writer of our letter is mentioned in W. G. Bean’s book, The Liberty Hall Volunteers.
