GRIMES, Bryan (1828-1880) was a North Carolina planter and a general officer in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He fought in nearly all of the major battles of the Eastern Theater of that war. Grimes was the last man in the Army of Northern Virginia to be appointed as a major general.[1] He also led the final attack of that army shortly before its surrender to Union forces at Appomattox Court House on the morning of April 9, 1865. Letter Signed “Bryan Grimes, Maj. General” on 2pp to Lt. Col. W.H. taylor, Hd. Qtrs. Grimes Div. May 4 1865. Grimes is requesting a new board be appointed constituted of Col. J.B. Pickens 12th Ala Regt.; Col. D.G. Cowand 32nd No Va Regt.; and Col. H.A. Brown 1st No. Va, Regt. The letter is docket by “J.B. Gordon, Maj. Gen. Comdg.
