Single sheet (both sides) letter penned entirely in the hand of and fully signed (boldly) "Isaac Leeser." From Philadelphia August 26'th "Ehul 5'th, 5598" [1838] "…Sabbath is just over and being at Mr. Allens where Mr. E. Moses and other friends are assembled I have resolved to scratch a few lines by way of accompaniment to the two sermons I send by her. One was delivered on [Hebrew word] the other today and was composed during the past week. They are connected and are continuation of the selection of Israel in the printed book [with specifics of pages]. Hope they will please you, yet I fear your partiality makes you attach value to things which otherwise may deserve but little commendation. …As I intend to continue the subject I would thank you to send them back earliest opportunity. Intend going to New York…but if weather remains intensely hot as it has been I may defer…console Aunt Rachel on the death of Mr. Judah…his sudden death will cause him to be [missed]…as there has been such poor attendance at synagogue during the summer I have delivered no discourses, as I do not like to speak to empty benches. Thinking that today many would be there, I wrote one during the week…but attendance today was bad enough. This is no great encouragement, but I have [prepared] for this much so I am never disappointed…" Few minor light brown spots, but exc. Fine example of this famous rabbi's and editor's thoughts and writing.
