A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Warrenton Junction, [Va.], April 15, 1862, in part: "…[on] our hard & tedious march from Winchester to this place. We started from our camp near Winchester March the 21st & proceeded on a very rough & muddy road towards Berryville…it rained during the night & when I woke was soaking wet. Mar. 22…we were detailed as rear guard for the whole brigade supply train…March 24th…news came that they were fighting at Winchester…we were ordered back…marching the whole 18 miles before we halted for the night. Mar 25. started the next morning at 8…when news came that we were not needed at Winchester…Mar. 27…our regt together with the 16th Indiana & two pieces of artillery went out reconnoitering. We went…to…Middlebury but could not find anything but a few rank Secesh…proceeded to Centreville…halted…here in a lot of log huts that the Rebels had evacuated among the bones (for this was the great Battle field of Bull Run). We stayed here two nights…[at] Manassas…we found another grave yard. April 12 we left of our camp & with the Mass. 12th proceeded on the railroad track to Warrenton Junction…where we are now. All the bridges and a good part of the track from Manassas were destroyed by the retreating Rebels, but is nearly repaired now and in a few days the cars will run to this place…we are in Gen. Abercrombie's Brigade…composed of the Indiana 12th & 16th…the New york 9th [Hawkin's Zouaves]…the Mass. 12th & 13th besides 2 batteries & about 18 hundred cavalry. Gen. Abercrombie is a pretty old man and an old Virginian an he goes in for respecting Secesh property. We expect to hear some big news soon from Yorktown…Lewis…wrote that they had not crossed the river yet…Charles Manning. Direct…Gen. Bank's Division, Gen. Abercrombie's Brigade, Washington D. C." The original "Due 3" regimental patriotic transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG
