A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on rare 4th Battalion Rifles, 13th Mass. stationery, by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Warrenton, Va., July 11, 1862, in part: "…on the 4th…before we had time to celebrate…had the order to pack up and start. We marched as far as Gainesville…which was about 11 miles from Manassas & halted for the night…they would have marched us further if it had not have been so almighty hot for you see John that the old brigadier [General George L. Hartsuff] has got a belly like a hogs head so he can not stand the heat…(Bully for us). The next day we marched to…Warrenton & it is the prettiest place that I have seen in Virginia…we have received orders this morning to be ready to march at an hour's notice from Gen. Pope. I have not had a letter from Lewis since just after the fight at Fair Oaks…I am very anxious…to have a letter from him…I cannot hardly expect to hear that he has escaped getting wounded after fighting long & as hard as they did in the last fight but I am going to hope for the best. Things look to me as tho somebody had made a big blunder but the question is who…Charley." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG
