A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Rappahannock Station, Va., Nov. 15-16, 1862, in part: "…we received our orders to march on Sunday the 25th of Oct…it never rained harder…brought us to a little town named Berlin on the banks of the Potomac. They had a pontoon bridge run across here but we had to wait two days to let other troops cross before we crossed…we passed through Snickersville…over some of the same damnedest roads that I ever traveled…Gen. Bayard's advance drove away what few Rebels there were here…we go on picket by Regt a whole Reg at the bridge & a battery to protect the shammy thing from being destroyed by the Rebs…from my post I could see one of the Rebel picks just across the river not more then a dozens rods off. This was in the night time & as soon as it was light they moved back. There is only Gen. Bayard's Brig. of cavalry, our Brig. & a battery of flying artillery here…this is the same place…where we supported a battery at the time of Pope's Masterly Retreat…we had got to march to Fredericksburg soon…[Nov. 16, 62]…the news of McClellan's removal was read to us on dress parade the other night. The news was not very cheering to us…you cannot find hardly a soldier that does not like him or…will swear that he was the man for the place he occupied…as soon as we do get the Green Backs I will send [them]…Charles W. Manning…". VG
