A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., "Head Quarters 1st Army Corps near White Oak Church, Va., Feb. 13, 1863", in part: "…I see that you have already heard of the new commander of the Army of the Potomac…I also see that you do not think that the troops will be as satisfied as they would be to see Little Mc come back. I want to tell you John that the whole army would hold up both hands…& say that McClellan is the only man to take command of this army & be successful…most of the troops have more confidence in Hooker then they did in Burnside, but they have not…too much in him…there was a detail from the Penn. Reserves here for head quarters guard, but they have got a chance to go to Washington…so there had to be another detail…which was made from our division taking 16 from our Reg. & I happened to be one of the lucky ones…we do not have to do any guard duty only in the night time. On a march we go with the wagons & have our knapsacks carried for us…I am much obliged to you John for…the medal [most likely a dog tag] that you or mother sent. I did not need [it] for I have one that I have carried for a long time. Nearly all of the old Fourth Battalion boy's bought one like it…I do not expect to see much more pleasant weather until spring for we had such splendid weather all the time after the Fredericksburg battle until the last move when Burnside got stuck in the mud. The Rebels had a big board stuck up over in the city saying on it. "Where is Burnside" and under that "Stuck in the mud" in very large letters. Large enough so that you could read it from this side of the river…you wanted me to give you the name of our sutler. It is Chase & Brown…C. W. Manning…". VG
