One of the earliest Jewish newspapers in England "THE VOICE OF JACOB…A FORTNIGHTLY PUBLICATION FOR THE PROMOTION OF THE SPIRITUAL AND GENERAL WELFARE OF THE JEWS BY THE DISSEMINATION OF INTELLIGENCE ON SUBJECTS AFFECTING THOSE INTERESTS…AND DEFENCE OF THEIR RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS" (all on the fancy masthead). Volume No. 1 through No. 25 from 16 Sept., 1841 to 2 Sept., 1842. Total of 200 consecutive numbered pages. 8 x 10½ . A wealth of fascinating information about Jewish affairs then current in England with lots of news about Jewish happenings throughout the world. An especially interesting story about Jews in America and Isaac Leeser in their May 27 issue. Some light aging; minor spotting on a few pages at rear; exc. +. In later hard marbled board covers. First issue introducing readers to the new publication gives lists of all subscribers, totaling less than 100 (most from London and few other English cities; four in Phila. one in Charleston). The primary financial sponsors were Montefiore and Baron Rothschild. Published by Jacob Franklin (1809-1877), first an optician then later a West Indies merchant and staunch advocate of religious Orthodoxy. He founded the paper as a mouthpiece against reform. Makes fascinating reading.
