A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., "Head Quarters 1st Army Corps, Va., Apr. 10, 1863", in part: "…all that has been going on here lately is the reviewing of the troops. First Old Joe reviewed them all and this week Uncle Abe has been taking a look at them all…I was looking at Abe, his wife and little boy [Tad]. Old Joe Hooker and staff and Gen. Reynolds and staff who had just been reviewing this corps. I never saw Abe on the ground before and I tell you he is a mighty tall one. He looked as smiling as a basket of chips but his stove pipe looked as though he had been carrying a brick in it for some time. His wife is a very good looking woman. They all went into a club house that we built for the officers…I suppose the "ate drank and were merry". The weather has been fine for the past few days and everyone is expecting a move before many days…there was an order issued to stop granting any more furloughs…C. W. Manning." VG
