A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., "Head Quarters 1st Army Corps from Camp Va., May 13, 1863", in part: "…I could have seen Duren, but when he joined the Regt. they were laying in their entrenchment's and I did not see him until we all got back on this side of the river. Gen. Hooker has been across the river and given the Johnny's a try…he would have accomplished considerable if the 11th Corps had not f men but then you know their first [will] be some excuse…it is a mixed up mess to me…I will only say that our Corps did not have much of the fighting to do and all the regt. lost was 2 killed and 5 wounded. The Rebels opened one afternoon when our corps was laying down below Fredericksburg…on the extreme left the whole corps was over the river except our division and they were…right on this bank. I had just gone down there with some wagons that were carrying down some entrenching tools…before they began shelling…they dropped the shell right square into the division. One shell burst in my Regt and killed Capt. Bush and Lieut. Codwell and took a leg and an arm off of a corporal…the 3rd Corps (Lewis' Corps) was cut up pretty badly. They were supporting two other corps and the 11th was one when they broke and run. They ordered the 3rd Corps to take their places….they had not been in line 20 minutes before the Rebels came out after them but…they found different stuff…then the 11th [Corps] was composed of…the 3rd has been cut up…Lewis must be killed or wounded…I was hunting all around the hospitals for…him but all that I could find out was that his Col. and Maj. had been wounded…his regiment…they lost was 4 killed, wounded and taken prisoners…Chas. W. Manning." VG
