A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., "Head Quarters 1st Army Corps from Camp Va., May 17, 1863", in part: "…things here are pretty quite now and the troops are taking things easy…I do not think that there will be anything done right away by the Army of the Potomac unless the Rebels make a push across the river for the army is already weakened a great deal by the 2 years and 9 months troop going home…if Gen. Hooker could not lick them with the army…how is he ago ing to do it now…we shall lay here until they get some of those conscripts out here…or get reinforcements from some where…I am going to send a badge that Lewis made me some time ago…I want a half dozen of photographs of myself and I want you to select the best picture…have them copied from theta…Chas. w.
