A good pair of fed-up Union soldier's letters, totaling 7pp. 8vo., written, on "Headquarters First Army Corps" stationery, by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Rappahannock Station, Va., Nov. 17 & 19, 1863, in part: "…I heard that our Regt was going to be paid off…I sent down to the Regt after it for the 3d time…they told me that the Lieut. in command of my Co. had not drawn it. When they asked him what the reason was he said that he did not know whether I was in Washington or where I was so he could not draw it. The damned old fool knew better than that for two of the boys…was over to see me…it makes me so cursed mad that I can hardly sit still…if they get a few more Piss Pot Lieut's. in the Regt they will be some smart that any man…will have to whistle for money of clothing. I want it just at the present time more then a little…Chas. W. Manning…[Nov. 19, 1863]…I know not what you will think of my last letter, but…you must excuse it for I was so mad that I could not write without swearing…I do not think that any one can blame me…I am obliged to you…for your trouble in looking round for…the boots…but I have only sent you 8 dollars to pay for them…this is every cent that i have…until the first of next January. If I had got my money I was going to send nearly the whole of it to you which would have been enough to pay for everything…I returned to Head Quarters…I was mighty glad…to leave that stinking hospital. I hope that is the last time I shall be obliged to go into one…my burn is all healed up excepting my earned that would have been also if they had dressed it as often as they had ought to…but they let it go until I got cold in it and then it was worst than it was in the first place…Chas. W. Manning." One of the original transmittal covers is included. Both with minor toning, else VG
